You are going to be shocked when you see the straight-out-of-camera version of this image!
Ok here goes... Don't laugh....
So here is how I convert to B&W in Lightroom:
First I click on Black & White. Pretty blah, right?
Photography is all about light. In this series, I will show you how I lit my subject (even in harsh conditions)!
Erin and I met downtown for a headshot session mid-morning. The sun was high. However, we found this little corner of amazing light (and no Photoshop required because that soft even light evened out her skin just perfectly)!
As you can see below, the sun is to our left (and a little behind) but is bouncing this gorgeous clean light off that white wall, creating a clamshell lighting effect! There is also nice clean light bouncing off the cement in front of her. I placed Erin right on that edge of the shadow (and checked to make sure there wasn't any hot spots or speckled light on her hair or face).
