You are going to be shocked when you see the straight-out-of-camera version of this image!
Ok here goes... Don't laugh....
So here is how I convert to B&W in Lightroom:
First I click on Black & White. Pretty blah, right?
Then, by hand, I will bring up the contrast, highlights, shadows,whites, and most-importantly CLARITY. This is what brings the crispiness to your B&W images.
My trick to get the perfect shadows is to press "J" on your keyboard. You should see red in the highlights that are blown. Start turning the blacks down until you see blue (which means you have lost detail in the shadows). Bring the blacks back up until the blue disappears.
This is called the J-trick, by the way, and is useful in color images, too!
The image to the right shows you the formula I used for this particular image. Its important not to use a preset, because each image differs. This formula on a different image may look CRAZYsauce.
So there you go! Fix those images that have too much flare. And perhaps, start shooting intentionally with it!
